How to change C:\Users\original user name to the new User name : Rename User folder name《1/2》

In Windows 10, even if you change to a new account name, you can not, in principle, change the user folder name that you first created and registered. See the related Post below for information about changing your account name.

▼ The user folder name is not affected when the account name is changed. You can not rename the user folder name to match the account name that was forced. Forcibly changing the user folder name can cause a system error.

▼ 1User accounts shown below will display the accounts you are logged in at any one time. An account just created by an administrator account and is not logged-in yet, is not displayed in the users folder because the user folder is not created.

▼ The 1user account[Family] below is a newly created as standard account by the administrator account, is not displayed in the above user folder name because it is not yet logged in.

▼ The user information is stored in the following registry.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList

Changing C:\Users\[username]

If you want to change the user folder name any way, you can change the user folder name by the following manual operation.

It is recommended that you back up important data from your account name or create a system restore point before you can move forward.

Rename user name

▼ You can replace the standard user name currently being used with the new user name. As described below, press Windows + R key to open “Run“. Entering 1netplwiz, and click 2OK button.

▼ The User Account window opens. From the user name list, select the 1user name to be changed , and click the 2Properties button.

▼ Enter a 1new user name, and click 2OK button.

▼ The 1account name in “Start screen” has been replaced with the new account name.

Computer Management

▼ In the Computer Management > 1Local Users and Groups > User, it has been changed with a 2new account name.

▼ Because there are no 1Local Users and Groups in the windows 10 home Edition, you can not check it.

▼ In the Windows Settings > Accounts > 1“Family & Other People” tab, it has also been replaced with a 2new account name.

Replacing with a new account name ~ Registry Editor

Since the registry contains system and a installed application information, user information, etc., it is possible that PC can not start up by the wrong registry operation. Please back up registry information once.

▼ Rewrite the old user name saved in the registry with the new user name. As shown below. Press Windows + R key to open “Run” window.

And then entering 1regedit into the text box, and click 2OK buttn.

▼ User Account Control(UAC) appears to allow you to run the Registry Editor. Click 1Yes button.

▼ Registry Editor window opens. First, move to the path below.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList

▼ You find the user name(here, Friend) before change in the ProfileList subkey list .

The old user name before change is still left in the registry information. Let’s change this to a new user name(here, BestFriend) as above.

▼ Double-click the 1ProfileImagePath value in the right pane.

On the Edit String window, you change the value with the new user name. Here we have renamed “Friend” to 2“BestFriend”. Click the 3OK button.

You have now exited the registry editorm and restart the PC.
