How to set Windows Photo Viewer as the default app when opening an image file

The “Photo” of Windows 10 is the default application, and has a convenient function for image processing, but some people may want to display it with a classic “Windows Photo Viewer“.

▼ As below, you can select 3“Photo” or “Paint” as the image-related application on Settings of the 1“Default apps”.

However, “Windows Photo Viewer” does not deleted in Windows 10. In fact, “Windows Photo Viewer” remains on Windows10, even though it is not visible.




▼ In the following folder in Wi`ndows File Explorer, 1Windows Photo Viewer” folder exists.

The following methods are commonly used to set the relevant “default app” when opening the arbitrary image files.

▼ In Windows File Explorer, right-click an image file, and then click1Open with > 2Choose another app.

▼ As below, by selecting 1Windows Photo Viewer“, and checking 2Always use this app to open .jpg files, The selected .jpg image file will always open in the Windows Photo Viewer.

If “Windows Photo Viewer” is not included in the above application list of “How do you want to open this file?“, it can be added to the list of apps by modifying in the following registry editor.

Running the Registry Editor

▼ First as shown below, press shortcuts Windows + Rkey and open “Run“. Enter 1regedit in the text box, and click 2OK button.

▼ User Account Control(UAC) appears to allow you to run the Registry Editor. Click 2OK button.

▼ Registry Editor window opens. First, if you are currently logged in, move to the following path.

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\photoviewer.dll\shell

Creating a key “open”

▼ Here, you create two subkeys under the “shell” key. First, 1right-click on the “shell” key, and click 2New > Key.

▼ Rename New Key #1 to 1open.

▼ In the right pane of open key, right-click and create a new value, clicking 2New > String value.

▼ Rename New Value #1 to 1MuiVerb.

▼ Next, double-click 1MuiVerb and type @photoviewer.dll,-3043 in the 2Value Data field.

Click 3OK button to close it.

Creating a subkey “command”

▼ Using the above method, you create command as a subkey of open key. 1Right-click on the “open” key, and click 2New > Key.

▼ Rename New Value #1 to 1command.

▼ In the right pane of command key, double-click 1Default and type the following path line in the 2Value Data field.

%SystemRoot%\System32\rundll32.exe “%ProgramFiles%\Windows Photo Viewer\PhotoViewer.dll”, ImageView_Fullscreen %1

Click 3OK button to close it.

Creating a subkey “DropTarget”

▼ Using the above method, you create 1DropTarget as a subkey of open key. In the right pane of 1DropTarget” key, right-click and create a new value, clicking 2New > String value.

▼ Rename New Value #1 to 1CLSID. Double-click CLSID and type the following line in the 2Value Data field.

Click 3OK button to close it.

▼ As a result, “command” key and “DropTarget” key were created under “open” key as below. The Settings are finished in the Registry Editor.

Setting “Windows Photo Viewer” as “Default App”

▼ In Windows File Explorer, right-click an image file, and then click1Open with > 2Choose another app.

▼ click 1More Apps ↓” and select “Windows Photo Viewer“.

▼ To connect to an image file(here, .jpg), select 1Windows Photo Viewer“, and check 2Always use this app to open .jpg files. Click 3OK button to close it.

The .jpg image file will always open in the Windows Photo Viewer.
