How to exclude specific file type from Index Search

You can use the search tool to find what you need in a large number of files. Indexing allows you to perform searches quickly. Indexing is a function that enables quick search of a file by indexing file information in advance.

By rebuilding an index, you can quickly search and get results for a specific file as follows. Index creation and rebuilding can take a significant amount of time to complete.

▼ We will see how to configure the Windows search to prevent showing specific file types in search results. As below, press  Windows + R key to open Run, and enter1control or C:\Windows\System32\control.exe in the text box. Click2OKbutton.

After Windows 10 Creators Update(version 1703), Control panel item disappeared from the right click menu of Start Button. You can check how to start the control panel from the following link.

▼ In the Control Panel window, select 1View by: Large(Small) icons, and then click 2Indexing Options.

▼ Or to take a quicker approach, enter 1Index in the search box and click 2Indexing Options in the search results.

▼ The index that was created in the past is displayed. Click 1Advanced

Excluding specific File Types

▼ The Advanced options window will displayed. On the 1File Types” tab, Check or Uncheck 2File Extension that you want to index or not. For instance, here we unchecked image file extension png format. Click 3OK.

▼ Rebuild Index dialogue box will open. When clicking on 1OK, Indexing will now be in progress.

▼ When indexing has completed, click on Close button.

Check the result

▼ For instance, when searching 2.png image file on 1D: drive, 3No items match your search message is shown as below.

Note: You need to rebuild index including D:drive.
