[Windows10] How to unlock the encrypted Drive with BitLocker Drive Encryption

BitLocker encrypts the entire drive, not individual files and folders.

With BitLocker, you can encrypt files and system files on your drive to prevent them from stealing your sensitive data for illegal external access.

Even if the drive is physically stolen, it can not be used to retrieve or write data because it is encrypted.

Unlock Encrypted Drive

▼ In Windows File Explorer, when you can see the encrypted drive with a Lock icon.

▼ To access this drive, you must enter password that specified when encrypting. Click the above 1encrypted drive

▼ Enter the 1password that you specified at the beginning and click 2Unlock button.

▼ If 1the password entered is incorrect, or you forgot password, you can unlock it by typing the recovery key instead. Click 2Enter recovery key below.

▼ In “Restore Key” dialog box, You enter the 148-digit recovery key in the text field.

Open BitLocker recovery key and copy

▼ Find in text file (for example, BitLocker recovery key EC15F2DB-6ABC-4DA2-B414-5C35E38A9369.txt) created in the previous chapter, and double-click the file to open the recovery key in Notepad as below.

Drag the following 1recovery key and copy it pressing Ctrl + C key.

▼ Return to the recovery key dialog box and 1paste it into the text box, pressing Ctrl + V key, and click 2Unlock button.

If you enter the correct recovery key, the drive is unlocked and you can access files and folders.

▼ For encrypted Drive, it is marked with Lock icon, “BitLocker On(Locked)”. Click 1Unlock drive.

▼ As with method described above, enter Password or Recovery key to unlock it.

Manage BitLocker

BitLocker Drive Encryption have several settings.

1There are setting items such as Backup your recovery key, Change password, Remove password, Add smart card, Turn on auto lock, Turn off BitLocker.

Backup your recovery key

▼ In preparation for forgetting your password, you can back up the recovery key by clicking Backup your recovery key and selecting the 1desired storage location below, For example, USB flash drive.

Change password

▼ ”Change Password” allows you to change the old password to a new one.

▼ If you have forgotten the password, clicking Reset a forgotten password, you can reset it in the text field.

Remove password

▼ To delete password that set currently, it is necessary to separately create another unlocking method first before deleting password.

Turn on auto lock

▼ When selecting Auto-Unlock, if you access the encrypted drive again after removing a USB flash drive from the PC, you can unlock it automatically as usual without asking for the password.

If you want to lock it by password again, click 1Turn off auto-unlock as below.

Turn off BitLocker

▼ If you no longer need BitLoker encryption on your drive, click 1Turn off BitLocker.

▼ It also may take some time to invalidate BitLocker, depending on the capacity of a encrypted drive.

▼ When the decryption is completed. Drive encryption is now disabled.
