Two ways to Disable Cortana in Windows 10

Cortana is a voice assistant like iPhone’s Siri, which is standard built-in on Windows 10. It is now available for Windows 10 November update in November 2015.

Cortana works and uses your data such as your searches, calendar, contacts, and location from device. Cortana uses also Windows Search to help you search the web and your Windows device.

Cortana Settings

▼ Basically you can set Cortana in Windows settings. First, click 1 Start > Settings > 1 Cortana, Or press Shortcut Ctrl + I keys.

In order to make effective use of Cortana, it is necessary to turn on options to some extent like location information like privacy. Microsoft removed the toggle switch option to be able to turn Cortana off in the Windows 10 Anniversary Update. But If you wouldn’t want to use, you can disable Cortana by setting a Registry Editor or Group Policy Editor.

▼ For example, you can Turn off Location in the Permissions & History to stop Cortana from using your location.

Disable from Local Group Policy Editor

First, Enter gpedit.msc in the Windows Search box next to Start and click 2Edit group policy.

Note: Group Policy Editor is basically standard built into Windows 10 Pro edition. For the Windows 10 Home, it must be installed separately.

▼ As shown below, press Windows + Rkeys to open Run. Enter 1gpedit.msc in the text box, click 2OK button.

▼ Local Group Policy Editor will open. navigate to the following path.

Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > 1Search

▼ Double-click to2Allow Cortana on the right.

▼ In the Allow Cortana property, select 1Disabled and click 2OK or Apply button

Confirm result

▼ Even if Cortana isn’t available for your Windows device, you can still search for files on your device in the 2search box on the taskbar.

▼ Privacy in Windows Settings has just changed to 1 Search.

▼ The details of Cortana such as Talk to Cortana, Notifications has disapeared and Only Search sections are left.

Disable it using Registry Editor

▼ As shown below, Press Windows + Rkey and open Run. Enter 1gpedit.msc in the text box, click 2OK button.

▼ User Account Control(UAC) appears to allow you to run the Registry Editor. Click 1Yes button.

▼ Head to the following path.

▼ You create a new key, Windows Search as subkey of Windows key. Right-click on the Windows key and click 1New > key.

▼ Rename New Key #1 to 1Windows Search.

▼ With the Windows Search key selected, right-click on the empty space on the right and click 1New > DWORD(32-bit) Value.

▼ Rename New Value #1 to 1AllowCortana.

▼ Double-click on 1AllowCortana value and enter 20 in the text box of Value data, click 3OK button.

Restarting with Task Manager

To check the results, You need to reflect the registry values set up above on your pc. The result of above registry setting can be done by restarting PC or signing out, but it is quite cumbersome.

As a simpler method, the result will be reflected by restarting the explorer in task manager.

▼ First, after launching 1Windows File Explorer, and then pressing Windows + X key, click 2Task Manager.

▼ After starting “Task Manager”, in Process tab, 1Right-click on “Windows File Explorer” and click2Restart.

Undo it

▼ To undo your change and restore Cortana, switch it to 1Not Configured or Enabled in Group Policy Editor.

Or delete Windows Search key or set AllowCortana Value to 1.
