[Windows10] How to use BitLocker to encrypt Windows Operating System Drive(C:Drive) ~ BitLocker Drive Encryption

BitLocker Drive encryption is a function to encrypt the hard disk drive of PC and the removable disk such as a USB flash drive, SD card etc. to prevent important data from being stolen.

When PC was stolen by accident, it also prevents the leakage of data by BitLocker encryption.There are several ways to open BitLocker Drive Encryption.

Start BitLocker from the Control Panel

▼ As below, press Windows + R key to open Run, and enter 1control or C:\Windows\System32\control.exe in the text box. Click 2OKbutton.

After Windows 10 Creators Update(version 1703), Control panel item disappeared from the right click menu of Start Button. You can check how to start the control panel from the following link.

▼ In the Control Panel window, select 1View By: Large(Small) icons, and click 2BitLocker Drive Encryption.

▼ Or selecting View by: Category, and click System and Security > 1BitLocker Drive Encryption.

▼ In the Windows search box, type 1bitlocker” as follows. Click 2Manage BitLocker.

The easiest way is that selecting 1target drive and click 2Manage” > “BitLocker” > “Turn on BitLocker” on the ribbon to start drive encryption.

BitLocker To Go:Encrypt USB drive

With the increase in the use of large capacity USB drives, the potential threat to be lost or stolen has become a big problem. By encrypting USB Drive, even if you lose it, the probability of protecting your sensitive data will be higher.

You can also protect all files stored on a external hard disk drive such as USB flash drive, SD card, etc. using BitLocker To Go

You can encrypt the Operating System drive(C: drive) where Windows is installed using BitLocker Drive Encryption.

Select the operating system drive(C:), click 1Turn on BitLocker.

▼ However, the following error message may be displayed here.

This device can’t a Trusted Platform Module. You administarator must set the “Allow BitLocker without a compatible TPM” option in the “Require additional authentication at startup” policy for OS volumes.

Turn on Bitlocker again

▼ After resolving the TPM problem above, click 1Turn on BitLocker” to start BitLocker again. It is working as normally.

Preparing to encrypt the C: drive that is the target of BitLocker encryption. Click 1Next button.

▼ On the BitLocker Drive Encryption window, the message is displayed.

You will no longer be able to use Windows Recovery Environment unless it is manually enabled and moved to the system drive.

Anyway, Clcik 1Next button.

▼ Choose how to unlock your drive at startup. Here click 1Insert USB Flash Drive.

▼ This will display the USB flash drive that is connected to your computer. If you have multiple the USB drives, choose 1one of them. Click2Save button.

▼ Choose How to back up your recovery key. Here, click 1Save to a USB flash drive. Click 2Save button.

▼ 1On USB flash drive window, if you have multiple USB drives, choose one of them. Click 2Save button.

▼ Choose how much of your drive to encrypt window. Select one of two options to encrypt the drive, and click 1Next button.

If you’re setting up BitLocker ona new drive or a new PC, you only need to encrypt the part of the drive that’s currently being used. BitLocker encrypts new data automatically as you add it.

If you’re enabling BitLocker on a PC or drive that’s already in use, consider encrypting the entire drive. Encrypting the entire drive ensures that all data is protected-even data that you deleted but that might will contain retrievable info.

1Encrypt used disk space only(faster and best for new PCs and drives): Only the area where data is stored is encrypted. Unused areas or deleted data are not encrypted.

2Encrypt entire drive(slower but best for PCs and drives already in use): The entire drive is encrypted. Space and deleted data areas are also subject to encryption.

▼ Choose which encryption mode to use. Click 1Next button.

▼ The message, Are you ready to encrypt this drive? is displayed. Confirm whether checked of 1Run BitLocker System check, and click 2Continue button.

1Encryption might take a while depending.

▼ Once this is done, BitLock encryption is ready. Here, you will see a message in the notification area that “BitLocker Drive Encryption will begin after this computers is restarted“.

▼ If you don’t have any data to save,click Restart now button.

▼ The BitLocker Drive Encryption window also displays Windows 10 “C: Restart required” to be restarted.
